Seasoned Wallabies scrum-half known for his leadership, skill, and trademark moustache

Nic White has made a name for himself on rugby fields worldwide. But beyond the scrums and tackles, Nic’s most cherished role is being a devoted dad to his three energetic boys: Leo (6), Sonny (4), and Vin (2). Together with his wife Melissa, Nic’s life is a dynamic blend of professional rugby and family adventures, with each day offering new challenges and joys.

A proud product of Scone in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Nic’s rugby journey began at a young age, driven by the support of a loving family and a tight-knit community. From an early age, Nic’s parents instilled in him the values of commitment, resilience, and perseverance—qualities that have served him well throughout his career. “I didn’t start playing rugby until I was 12. My first taste of footy was touch footy,” Nic recalls. Growing up with four sisters, he learned to value teamwork and sportsmanship, playing mixed touch together in a household where sport was a central part of life.

Nic quickly rose through the rugby ranks, establishing himself as a standout player with the Brumbies before earning his place on the Wallabies. Known for his quick thinking and sharp decision-making on the field, Nic has become a key figure in Australian rugby. In 2023, Nic took on a new challenge, signing with Western Force, a move that brought the entire White family to Perth. This transition marked a significant chapter in their lives, as they settled into a new city, embraced a new community, and found new routines.

For Nic, being a father is the ultimate reward. “Being a dad has been the most rewarding experience of my life. It’s made me more grounded and given me a different perspective on everything,” he shares. Despite the demands of a rigorous rugby schedule, Nic priorities spending quality time with his boys, whether they’re kicking a ball around at home, exploring nature, or embarking on outdoor adventures. The lessons he’s learned on the rugby field—teamwork, resilience, and discipline—are qualities he strives to instil in his children. “There are plenty of crossovers between rugby and life. A big one for me, and with our three boys, is resilience. I try to encourage that in everything they do.”

Melissa, the linchpin of the White family, plays a crucial role in keeping everything on track, especially when Nic is away. “Melissa’s ability to manage everything, from the kids to our home, while I’m on the road is nothing short of amazing,” Nic says with admiration. Her resilience and unwavering support have been vital as the family navigates the challenges of Nic’s rugby career, including multiple moves across states and countries. “Mel has raised our boys, often on her own, navigating moves across countries and states without the close support of friends and family. Through it all, she remains resilient, patient, and always there for our boys,” Nic says.

Melissa’s dedication to keeping the boys engaged and active is evident in the family’s weekly routine. “Sport is a constant in our household, with the boys eagerly participating in activities like run club, jujitsu, nippers, Auskick, rugby, and swimming each week. They love being outdoors and have really taken a shine to the pump tracks in Perth lately,” Nic adds. This active lifestyle not only keeps the boys physically fit but also strengthens their bond as a family, creating lasting memories and instilling a love for the outdoors.

The boys’ enthusiasm for rugby mirrors their father’s passion, and despite being exposed to various sports, their hearts are set on following in Nic’s footsteps. “When asked what they want to be when they grow up, it’s always ‘Rugby Player,’” Nic shares with a smile. Yet, Nic and Melissa ensure their children have a well-rounded upbringing, encouraging them to explore other interests and develop skills beyond the rugby field. “We both come from close families and hope that for the boys as they get older. We want them to have a variety of experiences and to find what truly makes them happy,” Nic explains.

One of the most challenging aspects of being a professional athlete and a father is finding the time to connect individually with each child, especially during the busy rugby season. “It is one of the most challenging things and something we constantly talk about—how we can get some quality one-on-one time with each of our boys,” Nic acknowledges. But despite the challenges, Nic cherishes the moments he spends with his children, whether playing at home or watching them grow and develop their own interests.

As Nic looks to the future, his focus is clear—prioritising his family and being present for the milestones in his children’s lives. “Mel and the boys have always been incredibly supportive as my career has taken priority for a long time. Now, it’s time for me to prioritise her and the boys, supporting them in their choices,” Nic reflects. For the White family, the future is bright, filled with love, laughter, and endless adventures, both on and off the rugby field.

In the end, Nic’s legacy is not just about the tries he’s scored or the games he’s won; it’s about the values he’s instilled in his children and the memories they’ve created together. As he prepares for the next phase of his career, Nic remains focused on what matters most—his family. Whether it’s cheering from the sidelines or playing in the backyard, Nic White is, above all, a dedicated dad who finds his greatest joy in the simple, everyday moments with his boys.
