Get to know Nick

Nick Franklin calls Gympie, Queensland home, where he’s become one of the most respected volunteers in the local hockey community. Although he didn’t grow up playing hockey, Nick threw himself into the sport when his children, Cooper (14) and Ruby (11), first picked up a stick. Today, he is recognised as one of the driving forces behind the Gympie & District Hockey Association, dedicating countless hours to coaching, mentoring and supporting junior players.

In 2025, Nick was crowned Australia’s Community Sports Dad of the Year, becoming the first hockey volunteer to receive the national honour. His selflessness, positivity and unwavering commitment to grassroots sport earned him nominations from across the hockey community, with many describing him as the heart of their club.

 

From coaching junior teams to managing Queensland representative sides, Nick regularly gives up his own time and travels long distances to support young athletes. Known for encouraging every child equally, celebrating their achievements and creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, he has become a role model both on and off the field.

As part of winning the award, Nick donated the $5,000 Rebel Sport voucher to the Gympie & District Hockey Association, helping provide new equipment and opportunities for junior players, while also receiving a Philips Reverse Osmosis Water Station.
