Nominate a Local Hero: 2025 Community Sports Dad of the Year Nominations Now Open!

Australians are once again being encouraged to nominate standout local dads for the 2025 Community Sports Dad of the Year award, thanks to Philips Water – a national initiative that shines a light on the everyday legends who keep grassroots sport alive.

With nominations open now until Wednesday, August 27, the award recognises the dads who go above and beyond to support their local teams – whether they’re coaching from the sidelines, driving carloads of kids to training, organising fundraisers, or simply being a positive presence in their sporting communities.

The award, announced in the lead-up to Father’s Day on Sunday, September 7, is a chance to say thank you to the unsung heroes of weekend sport.

Reuben Cotter, Queensland Origin star, proud dad of three, and last year’s Celebrity Sports Dad of the Year winner, has thrown his support behind this year’s campaign, reflecting on the crucial role grassroots dads play in sport:

“Grassroots is obviously such an important part of our game and growing our young talents to one day be in the fortunate position I’m in. Without the many dads, coaches, and volunteers at this level, the passion and the drive for these young girls and boys wouldn’t be there — so it’s a huge role they play and one that everyone is grateful for to keep our sport and other sports thriving.

My dad and my uncle had a huge impact on my junior footy years. They were both very passionate about rugby league and helped out wherever they could to make sure I was able to excel in the sport.”

Cotter also shared what it means to now be a dad himself: “It’s dynamic, there are always changes you have to roll with. You have extra priorities and it’s a fine balance to try and do the best you can in all areas of life. I can’t wait to be involved in my kids’ sporting life, no matter what sport they choose to play.”

Last year’s community winner, Nathan Butler, a dedicated father of three and long-time volunteer with the Blue Lake Soccer Club in Mount Gambier, SA, was recognised for coaching multiple junior teams, running training sessions, marking pitches, and mentoring players – all while being a hands-on dad.

“I just love seeing kids enjoying their sport, improving, and being part of a team. It’s about giving them the chance to thrive—on and off the field,” Butler said.

This year’s winner will receive a Philips Water Station (valued at $1,299 RRP) and a $5,000 Rebel Sport voucher for their club. Plus, the person who nominates the winning dad will also go into the draw to win a Philips Multigroom prize, just in time for Father’s Day.

Nominations are open until August 27. To nominate a deserving dad, simply share 100 words about why they should win at www.sportsdads.com.au/community before August 27.

Let’s celebrate the dads who show up, pitch in, and make local sport happen – thanks to our friends at Philips Water.
