Reuben Cotter, a standout player for the North Queensland Cowboys and Queensland State of Origin team, has already had an impressive career

However, Reuben Cotter’s most cherished role isn’t on the field; it’s at home, being a dad to his two young children, Sunny (2) and Banks (newborn). Cotter’s journey in rugby league began with the Sarina Crocodiles in the Under 8s, where his passion for the game took root. “My brother and I would play backyard footy during the week, and if his team needed an extra player on the weekend, I’d jump in after my own junior games. Some weekends, I’d be on the field for three matches because I loved it so much,” Reuben fondly recalls.

As Reuben climbed the ranks in rugby league, his family was always by his side. He credits his first coach, Paul Wright, and his school football teachers, Andrew Dell and Toby Poole, for shaping his early career. Yet, it’s his father who stands out as his most significant role model. “He taught me to work hard,” Reuben says, a lesson that has stayed with him both on and off the field.

Now, as a father of two, Reuben reflects on the joys and challenges of parenthood. “Being a dad to two children is definitely challenging at times, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” he shares. His daughter, Sunny, is a frequent visitor at his games, a tradition that has become very special to him. “Seeing her smile after the game and sharing those moments with her on the field is incredibly special,” Reuben says. This bond is particularly meaningful because Sunny has been with him during significant career milestones, including his time with the State of Origin and when he represented Australia.

Reuben believes that many lessons from rugby league apply to parenting as well. “While nothing can completely prepare you for fatherhood, the discipline and routine from the sport definitely help,” he explains. The ability to adapt on the run, a crucial skill in rugby, is equally important in parenting. “Sometimes you do the right thing, sometimes you need to change, but being able to stand back and analyse your performance is what makes the difference,” Reuben adds.

One of his favourite memories with Sunny is their two-week European tour after the World Cup. “While she might not remember much of it, those memories are incredibly special to me,” Reuben recalls. On the funnier side, he loves to sneak up and scare her, enjoying her priceless reactions. “Her massive personality never fails to make me smile,” he says, laughing.

Reuben’s partner, Mackenzie, also has high praise for him as a father. “Reuben has so many great qualities as a father. Our kids are truly the centre of his world, and I’m reminded of that every day. He’s incredibly hands-on and always eager to help in any way he can,” she shares. Mackenzie appreciates his determination and patience, qualities she believes will positively influence their children as they grow.

Despite his busy rugby league schedule, Reuben makes the most of his time at home. “My favourite part of the day with the kids is bedtime,” he says. “All jokes aside, Mackenzie has created a great bedtime routine with Sunny and now Banks. We all get dressed, hang out on Mum and Dad’s bed, read a story, and then Sunny goes off to bed. It’s a really special part of my day.”

Looking ahead, Reuben is excited about the future with his family. He dreams of taking them on a ski holiday to Japan, although convincing Mackenzie to swap their usual Gold Coast beach holiday for a snow-filled adventure might take some effort. “It’s a work in progress,” he jokes.

Many people might not know that Reuben is the family chef. When he’s home, you’ll often find him in the kitchen, whipping up amazing dishes. He loves experimenting with new recipes, making our dinners more enjoyable and exciting. Reuben also takes great pleasure in catching fresh fish and turning it into delicious meals. He enjoys inviting our family over to share his latest culinary creations, making each meal even more memorable.

When asked about his post-rugby league plans, Reuben is eager for what’s to come. “The thought of our future fills me with excitement because it means I’ll be able to spend every moment with my family,” he says. He looks forward to being there for every significant event—school drop-offs, award assemblies, and sporting carnivals. “I don’t know exactly where life will take us, but I do know that I’ll be right there with them, experiencing it all firsthand.”

Reuben Cotter’s journey in rugby league and his dedication to his family exemplify the balance between professional ambition and personal fulfilment. Whether on the field or at home, Reuben’s commitment to giving his best is evident. As Mackenzie puts it, “Our kids are the centre of his world, and I’m reminded of that every day.”
