Catching Up with Brisbane Broncos captain and Sports Dad, Adam Reynolds
As we continue celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Philips Sports Dad of the Year award, we’re excited to introduce another amazing dad who’s been honoured. In 2020, NRL champion Adam Reynolds was honoured as the Philips Sports Dad of the Year, joining a prestigious group of fathers recognised for their dedication both on and off the field. Reflecting on the award’s history, Adam’s journey as both a father and an athlete really captures what being a Sports Dad is all about.
Balancing Family and Football
Adam’s routine with his kids is as dynamic as his career on the field. Despite the demanding schedule of a professional footballer, he makes sure to carve out quality time with his family. “My routine with the kids is pretty relaxed and revolves around my work schedule,” Adam shared. “It doesn’t always line up, but I make sure I get to as many school and sports events as possible.”
Even with the challenges that come with the lifestyle of a footballer, Adam remains committed. “Routine is a bit hard, but I do get to do school pickups when I finish training or have a day off here and there. Most afternoons, we usually watch a movie or go for bike rides.”
Active Involvement in Community Sports
Adam’s commitment to his children’s development extends beyond the home. His kids are actively involved in various community sports, including touch football, OzTag, and netball. “I believe sports are a great way for children to develop various skills and values such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance,” Adam explained.
While his coaching role is limited to one tournament each year, Adam emphasises the importance of being present in their sports journey. “Being actively involved in their sports journey not only helps them improve their skills but also gives them a sense of support and encouragement. It’s a rewarding experience to witness their progress and see the joy they get from participating in sports.”
A Legacy of Support and Encouragement
Growing up in a rugby league family, Adam was surrounded by the sport from a young age. His parents played a pivotal role in nurturing his passion. “I consider myself lucky because both my mum and dad were actively involved in our sporting interests,” Adam recalled. “They took us to training sessions, matches, and any sports events we wanted to be a part of. Their unwavering support and encouragement helped fuel my passion for rugby league.”
Adam’s older brother Wayne was a significant influence in his journey. “My older brother Wayne was my idol, and I wanted to do whatever he was doing, including playing rugby league.”
Bringing Family Values to the Field
As a team leader, Adam brings the values he learned from his family to the field—dedication, teamwork, respect, resilience, and integrity. “These values from my family life not only shape my approach as a team leader but also contribute to building a strong and cohesive team,” he said. “I try to create a fun, positive, and supportive environment where every person and player can thrive and achieve their full potential, both on and off the field.”
Looking to the Future
As Adam approaches the end of his playing career, he sees it as an opportunity for growth, both personally and professionally. “Over the next few years, life for me looks a little bit different,” Adam shared. “I’m coming towards the end of my playing career, so I anticipate some changes both with work and family. I see it as an opportunity to stay involved in the club in a coaching role, and as a father and husband, I’m looking forward to spending some quality time trying to create a fulfilling and rewarding future for my family.”
Recognising Unsung Heroes
Adam is a strong advocate for recognising the contributions of local Community Sports Dads. “These unsung heroes play a vital role in shaping and guiding young athletes, and their contributions deserve to be acknowledged and appreciated,” Adam expressed. Reflecting on his own experiences, he added, “I am truly grateful for the coaches and mentors that I learned under as a teen. I don’t think I would be in the position I am today if there weren’t dads who dedicated their time to help shape me into the man I am today.”
Continuing His Support for Save Our Sons
Since donating his prize money to Save Our Sons in 2020, Adam has remained actively involved with the charity. “Yes, I am still involved with Save Our Sons charity,” Adam confirmed. “After donating funds in 2020, I have continued to support their cause and contribute to their efforts in raising awareness and funds for Duchenne muscular dystrophy research and support. By staying involved, I hope to continue making a positive difference and bringing about change for individuals and families affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy.”
Beyond the Field
When Adam isn’t on the field or spending time with his family, you might find him indulging in one of his hobbies. “I have a massive shoe collection and enjoy getting outdoors for a game of golf,” he revealed.
Inspired by His Brother
Throughout his life, Adam has been inspired by his brother Wayne. “Since my earliest recollections, my brother Wayne has been my ultimate role model. I would shadow his every move and try to be involved in everything he was doing,” Adam said. “Without his influence, I doubt I would possess the same passion or level of involvement in rugby league. It’s truly remarkable to think that I am living the shared dream of two young brothers from a humble dwelling in Redfern.”
Watching the kids play sport and just seeing them happy makes me smile each and every day!
Adam Reynolds’ journey as a Sports Dad shows just how much dedication, love, and community matter. As we celebrate his contributions and the history of the Philips Sports Dad of the Year award, Adam’s story is a reminder to all dads of the importance of balancing work and family life.
