Catching Up with Supercar Champion and Sports Dad, Mark Winterbottom
As we continue to honour the incredible fathers who’ve been recognised in the 15-year history of the Philips Sports Dad of the Year award, we’re excited to spotlight another exceptional dad—Supercar driver and father of three, Mark Winterbottom. Mark was honoured as the Sports Dad of the Year, and his journey as both a father and a racer highlights the balance between a high-speed career and the everyday joys of family life.

Balancing Family and Racing
Mark’s life off the track is filled with quality time with his kids, especially his youngest, Elliot. “I’m very lucky as I get to spend a lot of time with the kids. Especially Elliot, my youngest. He isn’t at school yet, and we do pretty much everything and anything together,” Mark shared. Even though his other boys are busy with school and sports, the Winterbottom family remains close-knit and enjoys spending lots of time together.
Supporting the Kids in Their Sports
While Mark is a legend in motorsport, his kids have found their passion in basketball. “The boys (Oliver and Austin) really enjoy playing basketball. They play both Rep and domestic and currently play almost every day of the week with training and games,” Mark explained. He’s there as a supportive dad, not a critic, helping them in the backyard and encouraging their development. “We play for fun in the backyard, and I try to help them improve in areas they want to develop, but they know way more about the sport than me,” he laughed.
Learning from His Own Upbringing
Mark’s approach to parenting is shaped by the values instilled in him by his own parents. “My parents always told me to play sports for fun. The motto was if you have fun and enjoy what you are playing, then results will come,” Mark recalled. This supportive and pressure-free environment is something he aims to recreate for his own boys.
Bringing Family Values to the Track
Mark carries the values he teaches his kids with him onto the racetrack. “I try to lead by example and all the things I teach my kids I try to do myself. Don’t give up, have confidence, back yourself, smile and have fun, never be intimidated by the occasion,” he said, highlighting the importance of staying grounded and focused.
Looking to the Future
As Mark looks ahead, he’s ready for the next chapter, both on and off the track. “We have a very good work/life balance at the moment. Who knows what the future will bring, but the kids are not slowing down, so I am sure my driving skills will become valuable with the amount of driving on the road I will have to do for kids’ sports and duties,” Mark joked.
Recognising Community Sports Dads
Mark is passionate about the recognition of Community Sports Dads, who volunteer their time to benefit local sports. “There are so many parents out there who give up their time day after day to help guide our kids and improve them as people,” Mark said. He’s grateful for the mentors who shaped his own career and appreciates the lasting impact they’ve had on him.
Continued Support for the National Breast Cancer Foundation
When Mark won the award in 2012 he donated $10,000 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Though he’s not currently involved with the charity Mark’s connection to the cause remains strong. “I will always be connected as it’s something that I can relate to and will always do what I can to help,” he shared.
Life Beyond Racing
When Mark isn’t racing or at the track, he’s all about family. “I live a very basic life. When I get home, I am not a race car driver, I am a dad. My spare time is pretty much kids’ sports these days, and to be honest, I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Mark revealed.
Inspired by Ayrton Senna
Growing up, Mark looked up to Formula One legend Ayrton Senna. “I really enjoyed watching Ayrton Senna. He was a great driver, but what I loved about him was the way he went about his racing. He knew what he wanted and fought hard for success,” Mark said, reflecting on his role model.
A Special Shoutout to Renee
Of course, Mark wouldn’t be able to do it all without the support of his wife, Renee. “Renee is amazing. She is the backbone of this whole operation. Helps run the business, has this family under control, and without her, we would all be cactus!” Mark said with a smile.
Mark Winterbottom’s journey as a Sports Dad is a true reflection of dedication, love, and the importance of family. As we celebrate his contributions and the history of the Philips Sports Dad of the Year award, Mark’s story serves as a reminder of the incredible balance dads strive to maintain between their careers and their roles at home.
