Catching Up with Sydney Swans Premiership Winner and Sports Dad Jude Bolton

As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Philips Sports Dad of the Year award, we look back at the incredible dads who have been honoured. One standout is our 2013 winner, Sydney Swans champion Jude Bolton. Since hanging up his boots, Jude has been busy off the field, continuing to embody the values that earned him the award.

Life After Footy

Since retiring from AFL, Jude Bolton has kept himself busy with various ventures. He has seamlessly transitioned into the media, regularly sharing his insights on the sport he loves on Triple M and providing AFL commentary on Channel 7. Beyond media, Jude speaks to organisations about enhancing team culture, leadership, and driving high performance.

Despite his busy schedule, Jude’s primary focus remains on his family. His daily routine revolves around his children, helping them get ready for school in the mornings and supporting their sports activities. “I have managed to juggle their busy workloads with my amazing wife Lynette,” Jude shares. Watching his children participate in sports and being actively involved in their lives is a priority for him.

Active Involvement in Community Sports

Jude’s kids are into swimming, gymnastics, and all sorts of ball sports. Jude stays hands-on, umpiring his daughter’s AFL games on weekends and offering advice when needed. “They are passionate swimmers, gymnasts, and different ball sports. I boundary umpire my daughter’s AFL on the weekends. There are often words of advice if they are willing to listen, but above all, my wife and I are just there to support them and cheer them on.”

Influence of His Own Parents

Jude’s love for sports came from his parents. His mom was a state sprinter and national-level hockey player, and his dad was also big into sports. “I came from a very sporty family. Mum was a state sprinter and played hockey at a national underage level. Dad also played a lot of sport so there was constructive advice from both of them on the way to training and games and plenty of support.” Their support and advice played a huge role in his journey to AFL success.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Jude is excited about supporting his kids as they try out different sports. Family travel is a big deal for them, and they love making special memories together. “Our kids are in that exciting time of trying different sports so I am just there to support and guide them as best as I can. We love traveling together as a family so creating lots of special memories during their high school years.” He looks forward to guiding his kids through their high school years and being a pillar of support.

Recognising Community Sports Dads

Jude is all about recognising local Community Sports Dads who volunteer their time to support local sports. He remembers his own experience with unsung heroes, like his old footy coach from U/14s, who instilled great values and provided individual coaching. “Many of the clubs would not operate without their efforts. I recently caught up with my old footy coach from U/14s and got the chance to say to him how influential he was in teaching me and instilling great values as my coach at a young age. I will always be grateful for his advice and style in which he provided feedback & individual coaching.” Jude recently had the chance to thank his coach for his significant impact, emphasising the importance of such contributions.

Continued Involvement with Redkite

Jude is still involved with Redkite, the charity he supported with his winnings in 2013. The Sydney Swans host the annual Redkite game at the SCG, reflecting their ongoing commitment to making a positive impact. “Redkite is still a big part of the Sydney Swans with the annual Redkite game held at the SCG and they continue to make an incredible impact in the community.”

Personal Enjoyment

In his spare time, Jude loves cooking for his family. Sunday lunches are a hit, especially his slow-cooked Lamb Shoulder with Garlic & Rosemary and roast potatoes. “I enjoy cooking for the family if I have time. Sunday lunches are the go and my slow-cooked Lamb Shoulder with Garlic & Rosemary, with roast potatoes is a favourite with the girls.”

Role Models

Growing up, Jude admired Robert Harvey, the two-time Brownlow medallist from St. Kilda. “My favourite footballer was Robert Harvey, two-time Brownlow medallist from St. Kilda. I loved his humble approach to footy but his incredible work ethic and skill. One of my great memories from my career was getting a chance to play against him and to witness how hard he actually worked.” Jude was inspired by Harvey’s humble approach, incredible work ethic, and skill. Playing against his idol and witnessing his dedication was a cherished memory for Jude.

“I might be a touch biased but I reckon the Swans are the best fans in the league.”

Jude Bolton’s journey from AFL champion with the Sydney Swans to loving family man and active community member really captures the heart of the Philips Sports Dad of the Year award. His story is a great reminder for all sports dads trying to juggle their careers with family life while giving back to their communities.
